Health Services

The role of the School Nurse is to promote the health, safety, and wellness of students and staff of all WISD programs.

We strive to promote a positive, collaborative relationship with students, families, colleagues, and the community.

An increasing number of students have mild to severe allergic reactions to food, insect stings or environmental products. We hope to work together to keep all students safe while at school.  We ask that all students with food allergies have a Food Allergy Action Plan (FAAP) from their physician on file at school. If your student requires emergency medication (EpiPen, Benadryl, etc.), please provide the medication for school staff. This medication will be stored in a designated area in the school.

Please contact WISD district nurse for more information or questions.

Emergency Care Plan

As a school community we try to minimize the spread of communicable disease by encouraging frequent hand washing and through the regular cleaning of community surfaces.  Parents can also help by keeping their students home if they exhibit the following symptoms:

Fever: Children should be kept home from school if they have a temperature of 100 degrees or above (orally). Children should not return to school until they have been fever free, without medication, for at least 24 hours.

Vomiting: In general, children should not return to school until 24 hours after last episode of vomiting.

Diarrhea: If a child has had 2 or more episodes of diarrhea within a 24-hour period, he/she should stay home for at least 24 hours after the last episode of loose stools.

Rash: Any fine red or blotchy rash on the face, trunk, arms or legs is reason to send a child home or keep them home from school.  Exclude from school until the rash subsides or until a healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious.

Ear or eye discharge: This could be a sign of a bacterial infection and should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

Flu-Like Symptoms: Sudden onset of fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, runny nose, mild sore throat and severe cough.

When Should a Child be Kept Home or Sent Home from School for Illness?

Any student exhibiting any of these symptoms while at school will be sent home based on the guidelines established by the Washtenaw County Health Department.

Parents are required to report illness to the school office when a child is absent.  Please report symptoms, especially respiratory concerns, fever, and vomiting as well as any confirmed diagnosis (Strep throat, pink eye, impetigo, etc.) to the office. This information will help us know when to notify other families about illness and also helps us track illness trends in our county.

Please contact WISD district nurse for more information or questions.

If your student needs to take medication during the school day, please be aware of the following:

  • Any medication should be taken at home if at all possible.
  • Medications needing to be given at school are to be brought to and from school by a parent/guardian.
  • Medications must be in their original container, labeled with:
    • Name of student
    • Name of medication
    • Time of administration
    • Dosage
    • Route of administration
    • Expiration date
  • Medications, both prescription and over the counter, must be accompanied by a written authorization signed from a physician and signed authorization from the parent.
  • Medication authorization forms can be obtained  from the school or on the District Health Services website.  These forms are good from September to August and must be renewed yearly.
  • Refill of the prescription is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.
  • Expired medication will not be administered.
  • Medications not picked up on or before the last day of school will be discarded.
  • According to district policy and state guidelines, students are allowed to carry and self-administer certain medications such as EpiPen or inhaler.  Written permission from the parent/guardian and the physician is required.

Please contact WISD district nurse for more information or questions.

If  your child has a seizure disorder, please have his/her healthcare provider complete the Seizure Action Plan.

Please contact WISD district nurse for more information or questions.

Emergency procedures are in place for injury and illness that occur during school hours. An incident report will be sent home with your student for any school related injury.  Whenever an injury occurs at school that is serious enough to require the attention of a health care provider, the parent/guardian will be contacted.  In the event of a life-threatening emergency, the emergency medical service (EMS) will be contacted first.

Please contact WISD district nurse for more information or questions.
